Also known as discussion boards, they are software platforms for holding conversations online in the form of posted messages.

They are hierarchical or tree-like in structure as each individual forum can contain a number of subforums, and so on.

A single conversation is called a "topic", and the post which starts the conversation can be replied to by as many board members as wish.

Each member is assigned permissions which determine which actions they can take, such as post a new topic in a particular subforum, or moderate. Their forum permissions are displayed at the bottom of the forum page.
